What is IP? How to decipher the extent of dust and moisture protection (protection degree IP)

In accordance with IEC 70-1 * All electrical equipment must conform to a certain degree of dust and moisture protection in accordance with IP (International / Ingress Protection). The degree of protection provided in the form of IPXX, where the first number refers to - the level of protection against ingress of solid particles and the degree of protection for electrical safety (Table 2), and the second - the protection from moisture. Possible combinations of the two indicators are given in Table 1:

There may be only the above combinations, because increase in one of the indicators of protection leads to an increase in another (for example, a product that can be temporarily submerged in water, of course, secure enough to not completely ignore the dust, so the existence of a degree of protection, for example, IP37 possible). There is also a degree of protection IP69 uprated to stability at high pressure.

The most ubiquitous degree of protection for electrical extension cords are: Domestic - IP20 (in some cases, "0" is replaced with "X", ie IP2X), for the professional - IP44.
